button-tab hat pattern

button-tab hats
After seeing a similar hat on the Banana Republic website this past autumn/winter, I decided I wanted to come up with my own button-tab hat. The hat is easily modifiable by just changing the stitch pattern of the brim and it’s a good way to use up some of those spare buttons in your button jar.clockwise from top left: white tweed - seed stitch brim; green - mistake rib stitch brim; natural - 2×2 rib stitch brim; black - garter stitch brim

Button-Tab Knit Hat

Do not reproduce this pattern elsewhere. This pattern is for personal use only. In other words, don’t try to make money off of it.

Materials
Size US 7 straight needles (optional)
Size US 7 circular needle (16 inches)
Size US 7 set of double pointed needles
Your choice of worsted weight yarn
Stitch marker
Yarn needle
Button (size suitable for width of brim)

Pattern
Brim of hat will be worked flat. With straight (or circular needles), cast on 98 stitches.

Row 1 of brim: knit
Row 2 (and other even rows): *k2, p2; repeat from *
Row 3 (and other odd rows): *p2, k2; repeat from *
Row 14: purl
Row 15: Bind off first 10 stitches purlwise; purl to end of row. 88 stitches remain.

Transfer work to circular needles, place marker at beginning of round and work in the round in stockinette until hat measures 5 - 5.5 inches from cast on edge.

Begin decreases, switching to double pointed needles when there are too few stitches to work comfortably on the circulars.

Cut yarn and, with yarn needle, thread tail through remaining stitches, gather and fasten tightly. Weave in ends. Sew button to flap and base of hat.

*****
Knitting the above pattern will produce a hat with the 2×2 rib brim. The brim can also be worked in other types of ribbing, or in seed or garter stitch, if preferred. You can make the brim as wide as you like; just try to do the bind off on an odd numbered row.

The brim tab can have a rounded edge by doing a one stitch increase at the beginning of rows 2, 4 and 6 and then doing a corresponding one stitch decrease on rows 8, 10 and 12.

Hey thanx! I bought a fairly mangy acrylic hat from an op shop b/c it was this same design, thinking that I’d end up taking a pattern from it one day, but you’ve saved me the trouble :) I’ve got the wool and needles out now and I’m about to cast on!

  8. Queen Boogie says:

Love the hats! I’m curious what stitch pattern was used on the green hat…I’m having trouble figuring it out from the picture… Thanks so much!!

  11. Em-En says:

    You’re welcome Tab. :)

I’m sure your hat is going to be rockin’.

  12. Em-En says:

You are most welcome Queen Boogie. The hat is a quick knit, so I bet you’ll have it done in no time. :)

  13. Em-En says:

    Thanks notsocrafty. :)

  14. Em-En says:

    Hi Sheri.

The green hat uses Mistake Rib (multiple of 4, plus 3) so the pattern needs a tiny adjustment. The instructions would be:

-Cast on 99 sts (not 98)
    -For each row… k2, p2 across row; ending with k2, p1
-When casting off for the tab, cast off 11 sts (not 10)
    -Proceed with pattern as written

    Hope this helps. :)

  15. Jox says:

What lovely hats, I really like the Mistake Rib one.

  16. Em-En says:

Thanks Jox! I hope you make one of your own. :)

  19. luannudell says:

I let a friend choose from a bunch of hat patterns online, and she choose yours! I think it’s a great looking hat, simple yet full of texture. As soon as I finish hers, I’m making one for me! Thank you for doing all the work and generously sharing the results with us.

  20. Debi says:

I wanted to thank you for your lovely hat pattern. I knit one up yesterday, tried it on, and my sister (who thinks hats look terrible on her) took it from me and wanted to keep it! I like the versatility of the pattern, and will definitely make another one with a rounded tab.

  21. Debi says:

I forgot to mention, mine is up on Ravelry (pale teal with a kitty button).

  22. Em-En says:

Awww, you’re making me blush a little luannudell. :) You’re welcome!

  23. Em-En says:

You’re welcome Debi! I can see why your sister wanted the hat. You did a great job on it and it’s so cute. :)

  24. ru n n in g thoughts says:

    hi em-en,
    thanks for sharing this pattern!
i’m a newbie to knitting…what is the pattern for the ‘mistake rib stitch’ brim? thanks!!

  25. Em-En says:

    Hi ru n n in g thoughts,

Mistake Rib uses a multiple of 4, plus 3 stitches. The instructions would be:

-Cast on 99 sts (not 98)
    -Rows 2-13… k2, p2 across row; ending with k2, p1
-When casting off for the tab, cast off 11 sts (not 10)

Then you can continue with the pattern as it’s written. :)

  26. ru n n in g thoughts says:

    hi em-en,

thanks for the pattern for the mistake rib, it’s coming out nicely! now i have another question (sorry!),
i suppose that the purl row for row 14 of the brim is the row that creates the crease between the brim & the stockinette stitch, but if I’m doing it correctly, that purl row falls on the wrong side, so it doesn’t show. Did i do it wrong?

  27. Em-En says:

    Hi ru n n in g thoughts,

    No worries!

Row 14, combined with Row 15, creates the purl line that separates the ribbing from the stockinette. Row 14 will be on the wrong side and Row 15 will be the right side. Then you start knitting in the round, in stockinette, on what would be Row/Round 16.

    I hope I explained that well. :)

  28. ru n n in g thoughts says:

    thanks again, em-en!
i FINALLY got it. i didn’t purl to the end after binding off the 11 stitches, that’s why it wasn’t right. and then i didn’t join the round correctly and so it was inside out…all in all, i have had to start this hat 4 times! i’m not very good at this, as you can see. :) but thanks for all your help! let me send you a pic after i’m done.

  29. Em-En says:

    I’m glad you got it ru n n in g thoughts! :)

Please do share when you’re all done.

  32. Kimberley says:

A friend posted a picture of herself in a hat she made from this pattern. It’s making me want to learn to knit all over again. Thanks for posting this pattern - it’s making me want to get back to knitting.

  33. Em-En says:

    Hi Kimberley.

I’m glad you like the pattern. Tip: when I haven’t knit in awhile, I like to ease back into it with instant gratification types of patterns. The ones that take only a few hours (or minutes!). :)

  34. Phoebe says:

I can't wait to make this hat. I'm new to knitting & it looks like I can handle this pattern. Just wondering, what size does this pattern make? And what's the gauge? I'm not sure how to modify patterns yet or how to figure this out by myself.

  35. Em-En says:

    Hi Phoebe,

I don’t tend to pay attention to gauge in my knitting. I would say that once the ribbing portion is done, you can knit 4-5 rounds and then measure that. Basically you’ll be figuring out how many rounds equal an inch. You’ll then be able to know how many inches the decrease rounds will be and that should help you know many inches to knit for the middle portion, so that your hat will be long enough. Hope that didn’t confuse. :)

Using the recommended weight of yarn and needle size, the hat should fit most women. If you are knitting for someone with fluffy curls or for a man, it may be too small as is.

  36. simply_hibiscus says:

soooooo i was trying to find a hat that i could sew my flaps onto and
this hat was the one that won

    absolutely adorable pattern

    such a cute hat

    brava darling

  37. simply_hibiscus says:

soooo i ended up messing up the casting off so theres like a little tail

in my opinion just gives it some character

    but

of course i put it on
and in the morning i find my bf wearing it

now he has officially stolen it from me :/

    oh well
    i’ll make another one

    with not so stretchy yarn

it didn’t fit me quite well :P

  38. Em-En says:

You did a great job simply hibiscus. :)

I like your color choices. And at least your boy is getting some use out of it. Think of this one as practice. The one you make for yourself will come out super awesome!

  39. Kathleen says:

thank yous so much for this pattern. i boughta sweater at old navy today with the cutest buttons. I’m gonna put the extra one on my hat

  43. Jaime says:

I can’t wait to cast on! Roughly, how much yarn do you need for one hat?

  44. JoyB says:

Just wanted to thank you so very much for this pattern. I am working on my third hay from your pattern. I got a skein of some yummy Aracaunia in a swap and made my first hat in it . Since I have made one in Mermaid in a heatehred raspberry and am now working on one of the same Mermaid that is a heathered Chocolate Brown. I am currrently on vacation in Maui and there is NO yarn store here and no place to get buttons, So I will get buttons on them when I return to Oregon on friday. I have a pic of the first one I finished on my blog if you would like to take a look. Thanks so much again. I am really enjoying knitting these hats. JoyB

  45. Em-En says:

    Hi Jaime,

I would say you need no more than 120 yds of yarn. I tend to overestimate to make sure I have more than enough.

If you are on Ravelry you may wish to look at what people have listed for their yarn amounts for their button-tab hats. Especially if they were made from the same yarn you’ll be using. That should give you a good estimate too.

  46. Em-En says:

    Hello joyb,

You’re welcome and the hat looks great! Hope you had a wonderful time in Maui. :)

  47. rasa says:

    Done it!
Mine looks a bit different, somehow, but I love it anyway.

  49. Ariane says:

  52. Em-En says:

    Hi Devi!

It’s just the right time to finish the scarf though. Just in time for winter. :)

Hope the hat is a fun knit for you.

  53. glasfaden says:

It IS fun, Marcien! I’ve finished one http://tinyurl.com/64z2sd and am making another one with the new wool and a bit of variation ;) Thank you once again!!

I’m so glad I found this pattern — it was the perfect knit for my sister for Christmas. I used mock cable for the button band (to match the scarf I made), and knit to just over 6″ before starting the decreases in order to get the fit she prefers. A not-so-fabulous photo is
    here

HI there, thanks for sharing this pattern, I made 2 of them as chemo caps for 2 relatives of mine battling breast cancer and they loved them. So, thanks for bringing them a ton of extra love and warmth during the holidays. Cheers!
oh, p.s. I knit them in size 7 with Paton’s Soy Wool Stripes and they looked lovely and fit well.

    Hello-

I love this pattern. I just have one question. Mine came out looking like a kids hat. Doesn’t fit me at all and I have a normal sized head. What did I do wrong? I should tell you, I am new at knitting.

    Thanks

I love this hat. I would like to knit it with a wool I love that I used to make another hat (which turned out too big). My question is what is worsted weight? The wool I have is 16-20 stitches per 4 inches–do you know if that will work? Thanks for the help and the great pattern!

  66. kittenkat says:

Hi Em-En, thanks so much for the very stylish hat pattern. I have one on the needles right now in a variegated yarn, and I bought some really great buttons at Walmart in bright colors. Do you have any objections to my hat being sold for charity? My charity is The Handmade Afghans Project and we’re trying to raise money for postage for the many, many afghans we mail to military hospitals for the wounded servicemen and women.

  67. Elena says:

I looooove these hats! Can’t wait to make all of them!
    thanks!! :D
